Answering Our Call to Care: Introduction to the Special Issue on Long Covid

Professor Todd Davenport, one of our esteemed Advisors, has edited this month’s Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy Journal, which has dedicated much of its content to Long COVID.  His editorial is entitled “Answering our Call to Care” – we’d like to echo that by highlighting all these excellent pieces of work.

It is worth taking a look at all the articles but the ones that stand out for us are as follows:

  1. “Long COVID: A Lived Experience “– by Samantha Laswell a Senior Physiotherapist gives a moving account of her life adjustment after developing Long COVID in 2020
  1. “Optimizing Long COVID Outcomes: An Interdisciplinary Survey of US Rehabilitation Providers” by Clancy & Dekerlegand – gives an interesting look at how a group of 300 healthcare practitioners across three different health disciplines – Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Speech & Language therapists – who all play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of Long Haulers – that were selected across 9 US geographic Divisions. The survey explores if they were aware of Long COVID and if so whether they used clinical practice guidelines in their rehabilitation of Long Haulers.
  1. 3. “A Physiotherapy Framework to Managing Long COVID: A Clinical Approach” by Pierce, Taylor and Pollock et al – is a wonderful physiotherapy overview of the assessment and treatment of Long COVID focusing on the 5 common LC traits most amenable to physiotherapy.
  1. “More than “Brain Fog”: Cognitive Dysfunction and the Role of Occupational Therapy in Long COVID” by Skiffington & Breen – Educates us all about how the skillset OTs have can be applied to the rehabilitation of brain injury in Long COVID.
  1. 5. “Shared Medical Appointments to Improve Equitable Access to Rehabilitative Care for Long COVID.” by Cheng et al – A blueprint method of how to provide shared care through group consultations via a multidisciplinary team in a way that can be serviced by a free or insurance-based health system cost effectively. An estimated 400million people have Long COVID Worldwide, this is the future to providing a service for all!
  1. 6. “Beyond the Clinic: Virtual Care as the Future of Long COVID Rehabilitation by Anderson & Bauer. We really like this one because not only do you get a good overview of the PT role in Long COVID rehab, but it also details how a program of PT care can be personalised and cost saving by remote delivery, ingenious!

Overall this is a great edition of CPTJ that helps to remind us that this debilitating disease needs all of our attention.
