Post-acute and Chronic Kidney Function Outcomes of COVID-19 in Children and Adolescents: An EHR Cohort Study from the RECOVER Initiative
Summary:
A team of scientists conducted a retrospective cohort analysis using data from the RECOVERY program to examine the potential hazards of post-acute and chronic unfavourable kidney outcomes in the pediatric population following SARS-CoV-2 infection.
They studied the data of 1.9 million children and adolescents under 21 from 19 children’s hospitals and health institutions in the US with at least 6 months follow up time with between March 2020-May 2023.
The study focused on 3 groups:
- Those with pre-existing chronic kidney disease
- Those who experienced acute kidney injury during an initial COVID-19 infection
- Those without any prior kidney issues
The findings revealed that children and adolescents who have COVID-19 were at a higher risk of developing major kidney problems post COVID infection, even if they had no prior kidney disease. Those who had pre-existing kidney disease had worsened kidney disease post SARS-CoV-2 infection.
