Research Summary:
The researchers conducted interviews via telemedicine of 165 patients with Long COVID over a 2-year time frame.
They evaluated how many of these people still had Long COVID symptoms after 1 year and how many people still had Long COVID symptoms after 2 years.
These people were monitored between February 2020 and March 2022 at 1 and 2yr intervals.
At the 2 year follow up 97% of patients were vaccinated, 80% received 3 doses of vaccine
10% of people caught COVID (a SARS-CoV-2 infection).
Out of 165 patients studied 139 (84% reported Long COVID symptoms after 1 year, & 101 (61%) reported Long COVID symptoms at 2 years.
The protective effect of vaccination against the onset of Long COVID was not found in this study, thought likely due to the small number of unvaccinated people in the sample.
In this study COVID-19 was more prevalent in people with co-morbidities.
The study concluded that having Long COVID after 1 year and getting a second coronavirus infection were significant risk factors for still having Long COVID symptoms after 2 years.
This study had a small sample size, further research is recommended with a wider range of people to be studied over a longer time scale.

Note: We do not agree though that this research shows that vaccines provide a protection against developing Long COVID, this is better shown in other pieces of research referenced in the article.
